She Gets a Happy Ending

An ambitious couple’s relationship strains under the pressures of Hollywood in Wheatley’s humdrum conclusion to her Fearless Fairytale series (after She Gets What She Deserves). Actor Ryan Roberts can’t come to terms with his failing career while watching his screenwriter girlfriend’s star rise and dumps her. Devon Jacobs is heartbroken over Ryan’s abandonment—and devastated when, after the lead drops out of her forthcoming movie, Ryan proves the best option to step in. The two agree to keep things professional for the sake of their careers, but that doesn’t make it any easier for Devon to watch Ryan spend so much time with his cute if talentless costar. It’s a solid setup, but the repetitive misunderstandings and failures of communication between Ryan and Devon will have readers wondering if they’re really meant to be. The pair waste a majority of what little time they do spend together destroying their relationship rather than working to salvage it. Centered on indecision, misplaced jealousy, and juvenile reactions, this proves a disappointing ending to the trilogy. (Mar.)
